Where Can We Build? A Smarter Way to Develop Housing
In 2025 Housing North partnered with the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) and Land Use Atlas (LUA) to include communities in Northwest Michigan to the National Zoning Atlas platform, part of a larger project and vision to remove barriers to housing in NW Michigan. By the end of 2025, eight counties had been included.

Michigan Communities Tackle Housing Crisis with Zoning Reform and Collaboration
Unlike traditional housing organizations, Housing North doesnโt build homes or place people directly into housing. Instead, they act as a catalyst โ coordinating local governments, advocating for policy change, and providing the technical know-how communities need to move forward. Their work, which encompasses 10 counties, is guided by a comprehensive housing needs assessment. Notably, they serve as the Region D lead for the Statewide Housing Plan.
In a tight market, a new 'exchange' aims to connect renters with homes
โThe group Housing North is trying to connect people who need a place to live with those who have places for rent. The Traverse City-based nonprofit launched an online platform to help connect the two. Itโs called the Housing Exchange. โ
Zoning Atlas Unveiled for Grand Traverse County
โThe project aims to translate complex zoning codes into โeasily understandable data and maps,โ according to Housing Northโs website. With funding support from the EDC and Brookby Foundation, Housing North partnered with Flywheel Companies, the University of Michigan, and the Michigan Association of Planning to create Grand Traverse Countyโs zoning atlas. Emmet, Leelanau, and Benzie counties are next on deck this year, with the goal of creating a zoning atlas for each of the 10 Northwest Michigan counties โ including Antrim, Charlevoix, Kalkaska, Manistee, Missaukee, and Wexford โ by the end of 2026.โ
A Flexible Regional Housing Fund Is Essential for Northern Michigan
โA low-interest loan can make a critical difference in the financial viability of a housing project by lowering monthly debt payments, freeing up resources for construction, and ensuring units can be rented or sold at prices within reach of local workers. Over time, as loans are repaid, the fund replenishes itself, creating a sustainable model for long-term housing development.โ

Grand Traverse County initiates Northwest Michigan zoning project
โOver the next year, Housing North and its partners will work to develop a zoning atlas and growth corridor mapping tool to guide community development efforts related to housing and beyond. The goal is to further support the housing development needs in the county, in collaboration with local units of government and other stakeholders.โ
